We are very pleased to be bringing Dan Markovitz to Iowa for two powerful workshops focused on organizational excellence. The first part of the day Dan will present his Building A Fit Organization Workshop. The afternoon will conclude with his popular Factory of One Workshop.

Building the Fit Organization

This workshop, based on the new book, Building the Fit Organization, distills the lessons from the Toyota Production System into six core concepts, and couches them in the easily understandable language of physical fitness and athletic excellence—no Japanese, no English jargon, and no off-putting references to Toyota. By the end of the workshop, your team will be ready to make your organization faster, more competitive, and better able to win in your market.


This workshop combines lecture with group exercises to help you develop an approach for embedding continuous improvement mindsets and behaviors in the unique environment of your organization.

Factory of One Workshop:

Managerial time and attention—not money—is the scarcest resource any organization has. Yet when you look at most companies (even lean ones), managerial workflow is riddled with waste and inefficiency.

Up to now, lean tools have been applied to business processes. But what about the waste in the way managers work within those processes? The latitude that managers have to determine their actions each day, and the high degree of unpredictability in their daily work content, is a recipe for waste and inefficiency.


Through lecture, discussion, and exercises, this session will teach participants how to apply lean concepts and tools to their own work to reduce the waste in their day, and increase the amount of time and attention available for creating value. By blending classic organizational and time management techniques with lean thinking, it will create a seamless extension of what’s being done on the shop floor with what’s being done in the office. These techniques will help drive your company’s lean initiative from a collection of tools to a way of life—from something you do to something you live.


      • Normal and abnormal conditions in individual knowledge work
      • Value vs. waste: which activities create value, and what’s the best way to perform them?
      • 5S: it’s about the information, not the desk.
      • Standard work for repetitive work and for communication
      • Flow, and the folly of multitasking
      • Visual management and kanbans

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this Workshop, participants will be able to:

      • Apply 5S to the physical and electronic information they manage (this does not mean putting tape around the stapler) learning to spot abnormalities more quickly by finding what they need, when they need it
      • Reduce multitasking and bring more flow to their work, so they can increase the speed and quality of their output leading to fewer interruptions, more focus
      • Create a visual management system for their ongoing tasks and commitments

Dan Markovitz

Dan Markovitz helps organizations become faster, stronger, and more agile though a fresh approach to the teaching and practice of lean. With a philosophy Dan_Markovitz.jpegderived from his years as a teacher and a running coach, he helps companies reinvigorate their lean efforts by developing an accessible on-ramp for their lean journeys. Dan has worked with clients throughout the US and Europe. Past clients have included WL Gore, Abbott Vascular, NYU Medical Center, the New York City Department of Health, Velux, CamelBak, Clif Bar, and Goodyear Tire.

He is a faculty member at the Lean Enterprise Institute and teaches at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, the Stanford Continuing Studies Program, and the Ohio State University’s Fisher School of Business.

He is an author of two books—A Factory of One and Building the Fit Organization—both of which were honored with Shingo Research Awards. He’s spoken at the Lean UK Summit, the Lean Island Conference in Reykjavik, the LEI Transformation Summit, the Shingo International Conference, and numerous AME Conferences.

Markovitz lived in Japan for four years and is fluent in Japanese. He holds a BA from Wesleyan University and an MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
